Applying to the Interaction Transition House
I/T House is a transitional housing facility dedicated to the support of ex-felons returning from prison to the free community. Both men and women are eligible for residency. I/T House is located in the Squire Park neighborhood of Capitol Hill in Seattle. The house has eighteen rooms a large kitchen, large livingroom, backyard, deck with barbeque grills, and a park-like sitting area and garden.
Any felon confined at a correctional institution inside or outside Washington State may be considered for residency at I/T House, with two exceptions. Arsonists and “Level 3” sex offenders (as designated by Washington State authorities) may not be admitted into our transitional housing program.
There is no application form to complete. To start the application process, inmates should simply send us a letter of inquiry, describing the nature of their crime, indicate their early and maximum release dates, and briefly explain why they might benefit from a structured transitional housing program, such as the one we operate at I/T House.
In reply, we send applicants an overview of the program, and in our response letter, request that they sign a “release of information” form, authorizing their counselor to send us a copy of certain documents which summarize their history prior to incarceration and what they have accomplished since they have been confined.
Upon receiving the background materials, we will review the application and send our decision to the inmate by letter. Because of our limited 18-bedroom capacity, we give priority to those applicants who have taken full advantage of prison-based programming opportunities made available to address their offense-related issues.
I/T House's waiting list of approved applicants can sometimes extend out several months, so we recommend that inmates send us their letter of inquiry to start the application process at least 6 months prior to their early or projected release date.
Finally, please note that the rent and program service
fee paid by I/T House residents is currently $400/month. Depending
on the house's population at a given point in time, residents may
occasionally share a bedroom with another resident, in which case
the above charge is discounted.
